Meet Scott: Excavator Operator
I’ve been an excavator operator for 18 years, and I’ve driven quite a few over that time. But of all the excavators I’ve driven, Volvo is my favourite.

Smooth operator
I really look forward to coming into work in the morning to drive my Volvo EC220E. I don’t really class it as work. It’s like a hobby, because I’m into the machinery anyway. So it’s a joy to come to work.

I don’t think there’s a better cab on the market. It’s very smooth, it just feels like sitting in an armchair. The cab’s really spacious. It’s all set out really well, everything’s where you want it to be, all within touching distance – the heating controls, the air conditioning and the cupholder – which is always important!

There’s good visibility from the cab, especially down the right-hand side – which can be quite a blind-side on some machines. And there’s the 7-inch monitor you’ve got in the cab, with a rear-view camera. You can have a quick look in that, and in your mirrors, before you swing around on-site.

Sound thinking
Also, on your servo controls you have four programmable buttons – so you can set it to be used for your wiper, for your camera, and so on. Personally, I use it for muting the radio. We’re lifting a lot of pre-cast walls on-site here, so the lads are working quite close under the quick hitch while you’re lifting those walls in. It’s ideal – I can easily mute the radio for a minute and slew the cab around, have a quick word with them, and then carry on doing whatever I was doing. I’ve driven other machines from other makes, and they’ve not got that. It’s really handy.

Stay cool
As well as the EC220E, we use quite a range of Volvo machines. I’ve recently driven the EC55C mini excavator. Very smooth, plus it’s got air-con in the cab, which is quite unusual for a machine of that size. When we had that really hot weather last summer, I sat in there in my nice cool cab, rather than baking outside with the lads – so that was quite enjoyable.

Even the best machine occasionally breaks down. If we have any problems, Volvo’s local service engineers will be on site fast – normally the same day. They diagnose the fault, and have us up and running again within a few hours. If we need a replacement part couriered overnight, they’re back the next morning to fit it.

How would I sum up my opinions of a Volvo excavator? I’d say it’s powerful, it’s very smooth, the cab’s very well equipped – and the back-up from Volvo is first-class.
