Lincolnshire Energy from Waste Opens its Doors to the Community
Nearly 200 residents, families and community stakeholders visited Lincolnshire Energy from Waste (EfW) on Friday 31 July 2026 as the facility opened its doors to the public for a special Open Day.
The event provided visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at how non-recyclable waste is managed and transformed into energy, while promoting the importance of recycling, food waste collection and waste reduction. The facility plays a key role in Lincolnshire's waste infrastructure, helping divert non-recyclable waste from landfill and recovering energy for local homes and businesses.
Guests were given guided tours of the site, including the control room, where they learned how the facility operates and the technology involved in the energy recovery process. Interactive screens, displays and activities helped bring the waste journey to life, while visitors also had the opportunity to put their questions directly to the site's General Manager.
The family-friendly event featured refreshments, face painting and gifts, creating an engaging and welcoming experience for visitors of all ages.
Lincolnshire County Council's Performance and Improvement team, Lee Kilner and Rob Smith, hosted a stand promoting the "Right Thing, Right Bin" campaign and offering practical advice on recycling and managing waste at home. Visitors were able to learn more about how to maximise the use of kerbside recycling and food and garden waste collection services.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many visitors described the experience as "fascinating", "informative" and "so very interesting", with several commenting that seeing the facility first-hand had given them a greater appreciation of the scale and complexity of waste management in Lincolnshire. Many also said they would be sharing what they had learned with family and friends.
Sally Hood, FCC Envrionment’s Education and Administration Manager, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people take such an interest in what we do and particularly as waste is such an important environmental topic. The Lincoln EfW team really pulled together to create an enjoyable and safe experience for all our guests. Hearing visitors say how much they learned and enjoyed the day makes all the planning and preparation worthwhile.”
FCC Environment, responsible for operating and maintaining the facility, work in close partnership with the facility owner, Lincolnshire County Council, which is responsible for waste management strategy across the county. This long-standing collaboration ensures that the EfW facility plays a key role in the county’s waste infrastructure, helping to divert non-recyclable waste from landfill and recover energy for local homes and businesses.
The Open Day forms part of FCC Environment’s ongoing commitment to education and community engagement on waste, recycling and energy recovery. The site welcomes enquiries from schools, community groups and other visitors interested in arranging future tours and learning opportunities.
