Mid UK Recycling puts Britannia washing system through its paces to keep vehicles clean

Clean Vehicles Promote Better Image and culture says Nick Mountain...
Operating on the mantra that clean vehicles promote a better image, Mid UK one of the UK’s leading specialists in waste management recycling, has for the first time installed a vehicle washing system at its site in Sleaford to ensure it does just that.
The company, which operates an in-house collection fleet of 70 vehicles comprising a mix of 44 tonne artics with walking floors, eight wheel hook loaders and skip lorries seven days a week nationwide, has up until now been faced with the arduous task of cleaning each and every vehicle by hand on a weekly basis at its Lincolnshire site where the vehicles return every Saturday for maintenance and compliance before heading back out on the road on a Monday morning.
However following the installation of a Britannia Strong Washing System, this has now come to an end as Mid UK Recycling is now able ensure that its vehicles remain clean whilst at the same time saving a staggering 45 minutes per vehicle cleaning time in the process.
Reliability, longevity and reputation was a key factor in Mid UK Recycling selecting the world renowned washing system which is manufactured by Smith Brothers & Webb, the market leaders in the manufacture and supply of commercial vehicle wash systems.
Nick Mountain, Mid UK Recycling’s Transport Director said: “We looked at a number of options, but Smith Brothers & Webb won hands down with its Britannia automated wash systems as we felt confident they could do the job.
“It’s a tough ask… Each week our vehicles are exposed to pretty gruelling conditions and it is hard to keep them clean and whilst washing the vehicles by hand worked to a point, it was a huge drain on time. This was also one of the major factors in why we had previously only opted for a weekly clean rather than contravening the driver’s time by having to clean a vehicle in the week, unless it was particularly dirty.
“The fact that all the drivers now have to do is simply drive through the wash has been a huge reduction in time and the vehicles look great.
“Promoting a better image and culture within the workplace is something we are passionate about and we believe it is important to have a smart appearance commensurate with our commitment to innovation and providing a quality service.
“It’s good for us and the industry as a whole and we believe that if the vehicles are clean and the drivers’ uniforms clean and tidy it reflects on the brand and extends throughout the operation which is important to us. “
Mid UK was established in 1997 when the company took the decision to move into recycling having previously been an agriculturally based business, however its lorry fleet operating under the brand of Mountain Transport has a pedigree spanning 60 years.
Britannia Strong, a three-brush gantry type machine, is capable of adjusting its brushes to clean rigids, articulated vehicles, draw bar trailers, buses or coaches.
A microprocessor control system automatically controls brushes to give a gentle but thorough wash to both small and large vehicles, and the horizontal brush control incorporates artic jump, back off, back on and draw bar trailer functions.
As a company which takes its responsibilities to the environment seriously, Mid UK has had a water reclamation unit fitted to its bespoke Britannia model. This unit can reclaim up to 60% of the water used during a wash cycle
To ensure its smooth running, Smith Brothers & Webb will service the machine four times a year under a long-term maintenance arrangement, using skilled engineers who have been trained at the company’s base in Alcester, Warwickshire.
With a commitment to manufacturing in the UK, Smith Brothers & Webb has a global reputation for the unsurpassed quality of its automated washing systems for commercial vehicles and trains.
