SRC Group achieves Environmental Product Declaration certification for recycled materials

SRC Group has achieved Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its recycled aggregates, sands, sub-base, clay materials and manufactured topsoil and subsoils. The certification confirms 0.00 kg CO₂e per tonne at the point of production for the certified materials, providing customers with independently verified data to support carbon calculations, sustainability reporting and procurement decisions.

The EPD builds on a circular economy model that has been central to SRC Group’s operations for more than 30 years. Recovering construction waste and returning it to productive use is a key part of how the business operates with materials processed and transformed into high-quality products for reuse across the construction industry. Today, 89% of all materials processed through SRC Group’s in-house recycling facilities are reused and since 2020 the business has diverted more than six million tonnes of construction waste away from landfill.

Using recycled materials in place of virgin alternatives has also helped save approximately 30 million kg of CO₂e since 2020 - equivalent to around 16.7 million miles of HGV travel. Virgin sand and gravel carries a Global Warming Potential of around 5 kg CO₂e per tonne, compared with 0.00 kg CO₂e per tonne for SRC Group’s certified materials at the point of production.

The business is also looking at how that lower-carbon approach can continue beyond production. EPD-certified recycled aggregates are now being transported out of SRC Group’s Wembley Sidings operation by rail and with rail freight producing up to 80% less CO₂ than traditional HGV transport, this provides a further opportunity to reduce emissions associated with moving larger volumes over longer distances.

The connection also increases the reach of bulk recycled aggregate supply from Wembley, opening up further opportunities to serve projects beyond the immediate London market.

Nick Brown, Commercial Manager at SRC Group, said: “This new chapter is a testament to the hard work, collaboration and commitment of our operations and commercial teams in turning this opportunity into reality.

"By combining our circular economy expertise with rail freight, we’re demonstrating that commercial growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. This is just the beginning of what we can achieve.”

The EPD gives customers independently verified data on the environmental performance of SRC Group’s certified materials, helping them make more informed decisions around carbon, sustainability and procurement. For SRC Group, it represents an important step in making that information more transparent and demonstrating the environmental performance of materials that are already central to its circular economy model.
