Swedish scrap metal transport fleet uses Allison transmissions for durability and life cycle value
Continuous Power Technology™ also helps Lantz Metall drivers accelerate faster and manoeuvre easier in congested Stockholm streets
Lantz Metall rents out containers, delivers them to customers and retrieves them when full. Five of its eight Stockholm-based Scania trucks are equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions where they deliver durability and life cycle value for its skiploaders, hooklifts and crane trucks.
“Our oldest Allison-fitted truck has gone 700,000 kilometres without any transmission problems,” said Sven Lantz, chairman of Lantz Metall. “The reliability and low maintenance costs were important factors when we chose fully automatic transmissions in this truck and the newer ones.”
Favourable life cycle value is also driven by increased productivity made possible by an Allison Automatic. “The continuous transfer of power to the driving wheels is a unique feature with our transmissions that allows the vehicle to accelerate faster and offers a 14 per cent higher average speed compared to a manual transmissions and AMT (automated manual transmission),” said Erik Kaplar, OEM account manager and market developer for Allison in Northern Europe. “It means there may be time for more loads per day, something that increases both productivity and profitability.”
Drivers of Allison-equipped trucks have a different perspective. Lantz said that, at first, some drivers didn’t want to let go of the manual gear stick. Now, no one wants to drive anything else but Allison Automatics because they don’t cause leg and arm fatigue and are more responsive.
“The trucks are just as fast as cars in the starting phase, thanks to the Continuous Power Technology™ that offers fast acceleration without any power loss in gear shifting,” said Lantz. “It's a big advantage. The simplicity of manoeuvring big trucks with automatics in heavy traffic also means the drivers can focus on the driving and increase the road safety.
“We have our business in several cities in the country, but the Stockholm area is a bit special because of the heavy traffic in stressful city environments. That's why we have invested in Allison fully automatics that are perfect for such driving conditions.”
