The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology in the Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Greenwich (based at the Medway campus in Kent) requires a laboratory technician to work within the team of Consultant Engineers and Students to support Enterprise, Research, Teaching and Development work in the specialist field of bulk solids handling. The successful applicant will work with a world leading team of engineers providing research and consulting services to a broad range of industry sectors.
Duties will include the construction and modification of Solids Handling test rigs within the Wolfson Centre laboratories as well as general maintenance and technical support duties associated with a busy pilot plant and laboratory. Guidance and help to learners of skills will also be part of the job.
Practical skills in engineering workshop practice are essential, proven by a track record of a formal apprenticeship and/or substantial experience. Exemplary hands-on skills in mechanical engineering are core, as well as the ability to deploy a wide range of skills and knowledge to deal with complete process systems. Experience in instrumentation, laboratory support, electrics (low voltage and 3-phase) and assisting learners of workshop skills would be very useful. Experience in the use of fork-lift, access equipment, lifting, welding and compressed air would help but training will be given to fill gaps; the candidate must be enthusiastic to embrace new skills and knowledge. The candidate will need to have well developed communication skills, both written and oral, and be IT proficient.
Where experience is lacking, training will be provided, and the candidate must be willing to embrace this enthusiastically.
Hours of work will be full time but with flexibility to make early starts and/or late finishes when workload requires. This post is permanent.
