Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd Secures Safe Contractor Accreditation
Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd, the UK subsidiary of global equipment, service and process solutions provider Metso Minerals, has been awarded the coveted Safe Contractor Accreditation, which is organised and run by The National Britannia Group.
Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd provides support services to its customers that include design, installation, operator training, service, planned maintenance, and spare parts. According to the company's Garry Bond, ensuring extended productive life and continued product quality of each machine is the company's key objective.
"Our staff takes great pride in their quality of work and understanding individual customer requirements. We treat health and safety as paramount to our business success, and a top priority for our employees," says Garry Bond, Metso Minerals (UK) Health & Safety Manager. "To achieve Safe Contractor Scheme accreditation, we operate a system of continuous safety management review and improvement. In-depth audits, assessments and inspections of our activities and documentation are an integral part of our internal procedures. Support and commitment from our service managers, field engineers and customers was fundamental in achieving the accreditation."
Analysis was conducted on health and safety documents, which required compliance review and updating to meet legislation requirements. This resulted in the production of a series of "live documents" that were collated into a CD-Rom called a ‘Site Safety Folder'. Issued to all engineers, the CD-Rom contains numerous documents, including;
- Risk Assessments
- Engineers (scanned) Certificates
- COSHH - Material Safety Data Sheets
- Safe Systems of Work
- Accident Procedures
- Method Statements
- Insurance Certificates
The ‘Site Safety Folder' is also presented to new and existing customers when tenders are placed for potential business. This gives Metso Minerals a vital edge in a very competitive marketplace, and plays an essential part in meeting the requirements of CDM (Construction (Design and Management) projects.
Metso Minerals field engineers are highly skilled, with some boasting 30+ year's service in the quarry industry. Each has received Safety Passport cards and they attend numerous training courses (including different aspects of safety) throughout the year.
Any engineer is only as good as his tools so each engineer's tools and equipment are inspected independently by Metso Minerals insurers, ensuring the equipment is fully operational and meets rigorous safety standards.
Annually, each engineer attends a ‘Competency Review' of their skills, innovations and ambitions, whereby, any new or refresher training can be planned for the coming year. Development of the engineers' professional skills is a continuous process, observing safety, new and old machinery, customers' specific standards and requirements.
"We continually run initiative campaigns within the business, to increase awareness of the company's working practices and safety culture," concludes Garry Bond. "Every employee plays an important part in achieving their own personal and Metso Minerals' corporate targets, to remain professional, competitive and the best at what we accomplish."
