Revealed: The areas that produce the most waste in England
The tiny Council of the Isles of Scilly in Southwest England takes first place with 7,605 tonnes of waste per 10,000 population
- The Westminster City Council, London, comes in second by a whisker
- The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is third
The southwestern area of the Council of the Isles of Scilly produces the most waste in the whole of England, a new study reveals.
The study, conducted by National Skip Hire Company Reliable Skip, analysed the total collected waste in 2022 by each Local Authority and compared it to the population to discover where the most waste is produced.
The Council of the Isles of Scilly comes in first place, with 1,727 tonnes of waste collected for a population of 2,271, which results in 7,605 tonnes per 10,000 people.
Second, is the Westminster City Council, in which there were 155,708 tonnes of waste collected for a population of 205,087, resulting in 7,592 tonnes per 10,000 population.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council, in Yorkshire and Humber, comes in third, with 204,162 tonnes collected, which compared to its 343,143 people results in 5,950 tonnes per 10,000 population.
Further down on the list, Shropshire is fourth, while the North Lincolnshire Council closes the top five. The tonnes per 10,000 population for these two areas are 5,534 and 5,506, respectively

Paul Bennett, Operations Director at Reliable Skip, commented on the findings: “It’s interesting to see how among all these bigger areas, a tiny authority such as the Isles of Scilly tops the entire list. Regardless of only 2,271 people living in it, the waste produced per capita is one of the highest in the country. Moreover, only two London areas feature in the top 10, demonstrating how living in the biggest and most crowded city in the country does not necessarily mean generating more waste”. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
