RJ McLeod expands its range of Volvo excavators
R J McLeod (Contractors) Ltd based in Glasgow has taken delivery of two new thirty eight tonne Volvo EC380E excavators and for the first time, added Volvo EC140 (fourteen tonne) and EC220 (twenty two tonne) models to its existing fleet of mobile plant equipment.
The order was awarded following a competitive tender process and from operating the larger Volvo EC380’s over a period of time on the typical prestigious projects undertaken by RJ McLeod. These include the construction of wind farms and major civil engineering infra-structure projects across the whole of Scotland.
“We’ve been running the Volvo 36 tonne + sized excavators since 2010,” comments RJ McLeod’s plant manager Bill Paterson. “On the whole we’ve been very pleased with them and the after-market support we receive from Volvo’s support centre in Stirling has been equally acceptable, so as we were in the market to replace some of the older EC360’s and needed to replace some smaller competitive makes in the fleet, we decided to opt for their EC140E and EC20E models as well,” he continues.
The latest package of machines includes two EC380E’s, two EC140E’s and five EC220E’s all of which have been deployed on projects across the whole of Scotland. All of the latest excavators feature Tier IV engines which are ideally matched to the machines’ automatic sensing mode hydraulic system. The machines feature an automatic
idling system that reduces engine speed when the levers and pedals are not activated – aiding fuel efficiency and lowering external noise. When only a single function is being used, the two pump hydraulics system combines the flow of both pumps for quick cycle times and greater productivity. It can also prioritize flow according to the work being done – e.g. to the boom for faster raising when loading or in deep excavations; to the arm during levelling or swing during large slewing angles. The Volvo Care Cab which is standard across the excavator range offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera which is fitted as standard.
