Volvo Motherwell scoop prestigious Lux award

  • Beats UK-Wide Competition To Win Industrial and Transport Lighting Project Of The Year 2018
  • Carbon Reduction Technology and enModus Deliver Smart Connected Lighting Solution
  • Over £84,000 Energy Savings Achieved Since February

Leading manufacturer of off-highway haulers, Volvo Motherwell, has been named as the winner of the Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year category at the Lux Awards in London. The winning project, a recently installed state-of-the-art lighting system at Volvo’s manufacturing site in Motherwell, has already saved the company in excess of £80,000, as a result of reduced electricity consumption and costs.

Volvo Motherwell’s strategic goal is to become carbon neutral. The company identified that an overhaul of the lighting system was required, not only to achieve energy efficiency, but also to accurately map energy consumption across the site. However, the operational environment of the Motherwell facility meant that many existing lighting control technologies were unsuitable. Several projects were evaluated and, following a rigorous selection process, Carbon Reduction Technologies and enModus were appointed to develop a ‘Smart Connected Lighting’ system for the facility, utilising smarthub technology.

The project involved installing super-efficient LED high bay lighting and a revolutionary Smart Control System. Using the existing wiring infrastructure to create a building-wide communications network, the system delivers intelligent lighting control of individual luminaires and automated emergency light testing. It also enables Volvo Motherwell to measure energy savings and see occupancy levels across the entire facility through the enModus Cloud Platform. This includes 28 machining centres within the machine shop.

The system, which uses more than 950 smart lights, has already produced some great results by providing significant improvements in lighting quality, as well as substantial energy savings.

Replacing the original metal halide lights with Carbon Reduction Technologies’ LED lighting has delivered 61% measured energy saving. The enModus Smart Connected Lighting solution saved a further 60%, resulting in 84% total energy saving. In addition, carbon emissions have been reduced by approximately 305,000 kg per annum. The energy efficiency solutions have achieved a reduction of around £84,000 in electricity consumption and costs.

Volvo Motherwell is now installing Smart Connected Lighting solutions in the warehouse and office buildings and, as a result, site-wide energy savings are projected to be up to £216,000 per annum.

The Smart Connected Lighting solution was one of five projects which were shortlisted for the Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year award and, following the announcement of the shortlist in September, a team of expert judges subjected each entry to thorough on site assessment.

Operations director Paul Hudson collected the award, along with project leads Drew Poulton and Martin Tatton, at the prestigious black tie Lux Awards presentation at the InterContinental O2, London on Thursday, 15 November.

Paul said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win as it was a very strong field with some great competition, but it’s fantastic that the steps we have taken to become carbon neutral have been recognised in this way. We are continuously working with our partners enModus and Carbon Reduction Technology to implement smarthub technology across other processes.”
