Waste Handling Screw Conveyors - utilising Hardox® Hiace

PROJECT DETAILS

After a successful tendering process, Bruce Engineering were delighted to be awarded the opportunity to design, manufacture and install replacement Screw Conveyors in a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) / Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) waste handling facility. A key feature of the tender application was Bruce Engineering’s proposal to supply the recently developed Hardox® HiAce corrosion-resistant steel plate.

The purpose-built Screw Conveyors incorporated Hardox® HiAce screw flights and folded trough liners to withstand the wet, corrosive and high-wear nature of the materials. In total, three heavy-duty Screw Conveyors were installed, offering prolonged wear resistance in a demanding environment.

This turnkey project was a successful collaboration between both the customer and the Bruce Engineering and Bruce Wearparts divisions, providing a custom-built engineering and wear parts solution!

Bruce worked closely with the client’s onsite production and maintenance departments to ensure that the new system was designed for longevity, prioritising ease of access and maintenance!

With an impressive 98.8% materials segregation rate, the company can report that they have not sent any corrosive waste materials to a landfill in over two years. This achievement highlights their strong commitment to the Circular Economy, as they continue to lead the way in waste recovery and renewable energy generation. Bruce’s commitment to reducing our  carbon footprint and the promotion of a zero to waste policy, perfectly align with our customer’s own policies.

Application: Corrosive Waste Material

Equipment: 3 No. Replacement Screw Conveyors, Belt Conveyor & Tri-Pole Overband Magnet

Volume: 600No. 700 Litre Bins Daily (30 Tonne)

Output: Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) or Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)

LANDFILL WASTE SOLUTION

The corrosive ‘folk’ waste material, whilst not recyclable, can be repurposed as an energy source, significantly reducing the amount sent to landfill. After being processed through the Screw Conveyors, this material is transported to local Waste Plants or Cement Kilns. There, it will be used as fuel for generating electricity and hot water!

The new addition of a tri-pole Overband Magnet has enabled the client to efficiently remove a high percentage of metal fragments, addressing a longstanding challenge in processing the material for RDF or SRF fuel.

ON-SITE INSTALLATION

The Bruce team successfully navigated strict installation times, coordinating around the site's 24/7 operational schedule to complete the installation ahead of schedule. A dedicated team worked around the clock, with day and night shifts, allowing the site to resume operations seamlessly.

HARDOX® HIACE

Hardox® HiAce is a true wear fighter, especially in acidic and corrosive environments that threaten to eat away at your equipment. This corrosion-resistant steel plate helps to meet the challenges of corrosive wear environments found in municipal and industrial waste management, waste-to-energy plants, and in mining and process industries.

A necessary hardness to provide a long service life, in combination with the toughness it takes to perform as a structural steel.
